What this guide will help you understand
- How to find the exact spot, not just the street
- How early to arrive, and why
- What happens if you miss it
Almost everything that goes wrong on the morning of a local trip goes wrong in the same fifteen minutes, at the same place: somebody standing on the wrong side of a road, in the dark, looking for a coach that is ninety metres away.
We give you the exact spot, not the street
Your joining instructions name the road, the side of it, the nearest building and what the coach will be parked beside. That level of detail exists because 'outside the station' is meaningless at half past five in the morning at a station with four exits.
They also name your coordinator and give the coach registration. If you cannot see either at the stated time, call the coordinator before you start walking — they are usually closer than you think.
Ten minutes early, not thirty
Ten minutes is enough to find the coach, put a bag in the hold and get on. Thirty minutes usually means standing in the cold, because the coach is often not there yet and there is rarely anywhere to sit.
If you are late
Call the number on your joining instructions immediately rather than running. If the coach is still in the area the coordinator can sometimes help, and occasionally it is possible to join at the next stop.
If it has gone, it has gone. A coach that waits ten minutes for one person makes forty other people late for a timed entry, and a missed departure is not refundable. We are strict about this precisely because we are not willing to be unfair to everyone else on board.
